Blockchain and Africa

On Saturday November 1, 2008, a person or persons under the nom de plume Satoshi Nakamoto posted on a cryptography website that, “I’ve been working on a new electronic cash system that’s fully peer-to-peer, with no trusted third party.” Included in the post was a link to a downloadable PDF entitled: Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.

Ten years later we are just beginning to understand how revolutionary this idea was and how transformational the technology and innovation that it has unleashed can be.

This year’s research forum will turn its attention to how blockchain technologies are already being used on the African continent and the potential for these technologies to create uniquely African solutions in mining, agriculture, infrastructure and service delivery, transparency, trust creation, financing, interaction with “the Internet of Things” (IoT) and the enabling of truly inclusive growth.
