Jon Merrill

Mr. Merrill is a senior executive officer of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and joined the UN Security Council Taskforce in December 2012.  He previously served as Assistant Secretary, Pakistan and Afghanistan Branch from October 2009. In the department Mr. Merrill has also served as Director of the Afghanistan Section (2008-2009) and Director of the United Nations and Commonwealth Section.

Prior to joining the department, Mr. Merrill was the Director of the Middle East, Europe and Africa Section of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (2003-2007), the Inquiry Secretary for the Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence Services (2002-2004), and an adviser to the Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade (1996-1998). From 1999 to 2002 Mr. Merrill was employed as Manager of Public Affairs and Senior Research Officer (UN Security Council) at Australia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, New York. Mr. Merrill was born in 1967 and educated at the Australian National University, the University of Canberra and Université de Genève.
